Once a baby is mobile, the whole floor becomes the problem. A playpen gives you a defined safe area, which is the difference between cooking a meal and abandoning it halfway through to retrieve a child from the hallway.

Using it safely

A playpen reduces risk within its boundary but it is not a substitute for supervision, and it should not be used for unsupervised sleep. Once your child can climb the barrier, the playpen has been outgrown.

Questions parents ask

Can my baby sleep in it? Treat it as a play space, not a sleep space. Safe sleep should happen in a cot or crib built for that purpose.

When do children outgrow it? As soon as they can climb out, which happens sooner than most parents expect. Stop using it at that point.

Does it move between rooms easily? It is designed to be portable, which is most of the value. Re-check the locking joins after every move.
